EcoRegion
Växjö is partner in EcoRegion where the aim is to develop the Baltic Sea Region into the world's first EcoRegion, where economical growth goes hand in hand with environmental integrity and social justice. Växjö has a long experience of working with environmental issues and as being a partner in EcoRegion, Växjö will strengthen the work with sustainable development with efficient indicators and targets. Within EcoRegion a number of activities will take place in all partner regions and municipalities.
SESAC, Sustainable Energy Systems in Advanced Cities, is a part of the EU Commission’s Concerto initiative within the sixth framework programme. Växjö, Grenoble (France) and Delft (Netherlands) are involved in the project.
In Växjö, the project is focused on sustainable urban energy development, including renewable energy production, energy efficiency and behavioural changes. Some concrete actions are:
- Energy efficient buildings and passive houses are constructed out of wood.
- Biogas is used for heat, power andvehicle fuel.
- Biomass is used for district cooling
- PVs on the roof of a school.
- Pedagogic systems that help residents to reduce their energy use.
